Body Gua Sha
in San Francisco

Targeted treatments designed to release tension and restore movement, not just mask discomfort.

Body gua sha is a hands-on therapy rooted in traditional Chinese medicine that works to free fascia, improve circulation, and support the body’s natural recovery processes.

Focused on patterns of tension, not just isolated pain, our sessions can be a standalone treatment or part of a 60–90 minute comprehensive acupuncture session.

What Body Gua Sha Can Address

Your Body Gua Sha Session, Step-by-Step

Assessment and Palpation

Your session begins with a detailed assessment and palpation of targeted areas to identify muscle tension, fascial restrictions, and patterns of imbalance. This allows us to pinpoint the root causes of discomfort and determine the most effective treatment approach. This can be offered as a standalone treatment or incorporated into your comprehensive 60–90 minute sessions.

Gua Sha Treatment

Using specialized tools and body oil, your provider applies firm, repeated strokes along the skin to release fascial tension, break up adhesions, and stimulate circulation in the underlying tissue. Pressure is always adjusted to your comfort level throughout the session. Most people find it deeply relieving, though areas of chronic tightness may feel more sensitive at first.

What to Expect After Your Session

Temporary redness or light bruising on the treated areas is completely normal and typically fades within 24 to 72 hours. This is called petechiae and is a sign that circulation has been activated in the tissue. Drink plenty of water, avoid cold exposure on the treated areas, and rest if possible. Some people feel immediate relief; others notice improvement over the following day or two as the tissue continues to respond.
